A Fateful Start with Amway

“We’ve been with Amway since we were young!” Thomas and Anita exclaim in unison, as if reciting a line from an advertisement, filling the room with laughter. Thomas and Anita each joined Amway at the age of 18, already recognizing the company’s growth potential, and quickly attained to Ruby. “At that time, we focused on our jobs while developing our Amway business. Later, due to changes in Amway’s market strategy, we put the business on hold and returned to traditional careers.”

Staying Focused on the Present, Seizing Opportunities

Thomas has worked in the advertising industry for over 25 years, serving as Advertising Director for a fashion magazine. Amid the glittering lights, he witnessed the rise and fall of trends, as well as the ups and downs of the industry. Reflecting on his corporate career, Thomas says, “When fashion magazines were at their peak, the workload was overwhelming – it was the ‘golden era’ of the industry. But after the financial tsunami and the pandemic a few years ago, the business landscape changed dramatically. Facing the annual pressure to meet targets, along with the dominance of online platforms, we had to step back and rethink our future direction.”

Anita, a makeup artist, went on to establish a makeup school and a wedding services company, showcasing her pioneering spirit. Having tasted both the sweetness and bitterness of entrepreneurship, she recalls, “From administration and accounting to stocking inventory and updating website information… I had to handle everything myself and also bear the pressure of sales. Although the journey was fulfilling, it took a tremendous amount of effort.” As a mother of two young children, the pressure was immense. Traditional industries are undeniably vulnerable to economic fluctuations, and Anita was no exception. “We realized that even when our conventional work came to a standstill, the Amway business we had set aside continued to bring us a stable stream of financial security. That gave us the determination to pick it up again.”

Leading by Example, Moving Forward

“Amway truly embodies the power of simplicity. Compared to the complexity of running a traditional business, building an Amway business starts with simply using and sharing the products, then participating in company training to gradually understand the business plan. Most importantly, we have leaders and partners in the team supporting us along the way – we never have to go it alone,” the couple shares.

“Little by little, you find your own pace and move toward success step by step.” Today, Thomas and Anita have reached the Diamond. “To us, this is of course a recognition. More importantly, Amway has helped us discover our own potential and broaden our horizons. It shows our partners that Amway is a sustainable business – even if you step away, you can still achieve success by renewing your commitment.” Through their own story, they hope to inspire and give hope to their partners.

A Broader Vision, a Wider Perspective

While working hard to achieve the Diamond, Thomas and Anita also deepened their understanding of team building. Thomas shares, “In the past, we used to set plans and goals for our partners, hoping to pave a path to success for them and reduce the chances of them wandering aimlessly.” But as the team grew, the time they needed to invest increased, and they realized this approach was no longer effective. Anita adds, “Instead of sticking to old methods, we now communicate with our partners, understand their different personalities and perspectives, and provide appropriate support when needed.”

They believe learning to let go is essential. As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” They hope their partners can accumulate experience through failures and trials, gradually discovering their own path to success. For Thomas and Anita, that is the wisdom of a true leader.

Balance Between Stability and Risk Taking

Thomas believes that developing an Amway business requires “70% stability and 30% innovation.” For him, stability is the foundation, while innovation is the strength that extends from it. He laughs, “I’m someone who values stability. Once we have a solid foundation, I can let Anita take the adventurous steps!” Summing up what she has gained from Amway, Anita says with confidence, “Amway has helped me develop soft skills and a business mindset. No matter what challenges arise, I can face them with confidence and composure.” With their complementary strengths and mutual understanding, the couple is ready to embark on another adventure together.
