A global study*, with the participation of scholars from City University of Hong Kong, found contamination of common pharmaceuticals, like caffeine, nicotine and paracetamol, in many of the world’s rivers across all seven continents. Among the 258 sampled rivers in the study, two rivers in Hong Kong, the Kai Tak River and the Lam Tsuen River, were ranked as the 29th and 70th most polluted rivers, respectively. Meanwhile, different antibiotics have been detected in the two rivers, which may disrupt the natural bacterial community and lead to antibiotic resistance, reducing the therapeutic effectiveness of antibiotics. In the long run, pharmaceuticals pose a potential threat to the ecosystem and human health.
