When Hobbits meet Fireflies!
On Day 2 of the Auckland trip, we visited the Hobbiton™ movie set – the only fully preserved production location from "The Lord of the Rings" film series. Classic movie scenes such as Hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, the Mill, and the Party Tree appeared right in front of us. Everyone had their cameras ready, not wanting to miss any photo opportunities.
We also visited the Waitomo Cave near Rotorua, the largest Maori settlement on the North Island of New Zealand. In Maori, wai means water, and tomo means cave, so Waitomo literally means “water cave”. The local guides led us into the 15,000-year-old limestone cave, where we walked along magnificent stalactite passages and looked up to see thousands of fireflies – sometimes referred to as the ninth wonder of the world. It looked like a stunning starry blue sky.
Two days gone and plenty more adventures to come!
