Continuing the story: Dendrobium, long considered the No. 1 among the “Nine Great Medicinal Herbs” for centuries, has gone through a remarkable transformation - from a fresh flower blooming in the forest to a key ingredient in Nutrilite™ iCell Drink. Beyond the first two steps, what further transformation did it undergo?  

Step 3: 4 hours of drying - concentrating time into weight

Immediately after harvesting 1,000 grams of fresh flowers (approximately 10,000 blossoms), the flowers are sent to a temperature-controlled drying facility. The moment the flowers leave their stems, the loss of active compounds begins. From that instant onward, every step must happen fast, so the plant’s vitality is captured and preserved at its fullest.

After 4 hours of precise dehydration process, the fresh flowers shrink dramatically in size - originally packed in a bamboo basket with a diameter of 1 metre. Their color deepens into a rich amber, and they are then transferred into small glass bottle with a diameter of only 15cm. On the scale, the weight drops abruptly from 1,000 grams to 77 grams.

Step 4: A 72-hour freeze-drying process – one in a million

With 77 grams of dried flowers delivered to the R&D laboratory, an even more precise challenge begins.

After reflux extraction, filtration, and concentration, the extract is placed in an ultra-low-temperature environment at -70°C to protect the dendrobium flowers’ heat-sensitive active compounds. It undergoes a freeze-drying process lasting three days and three nights (72 hours). Finally, the freeze-dried solids are milled into a fine powder - when weighed precisely, only 18 grams remain.

The small bottle containing 18 grams of pale-yellow powder concentrates the essence of 10,000 fresh flowers. 

Dendrobium – life force from nature

These final 18 grams are more than the outcome of laboratory processes. They also represent the contributions from the environment and the plant itself, to sunlight, hundreds of kilometers of transport, and the wait for up to 72 hours.
