The “Shennong System” is a smart Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) data analytics platform. Its purpose is to use modern technology to support innovative research on TCM products, and to help develop a range of Nutrilite’s TCM products.

The Biggest Challenge in Modernizing TCM

On the TCM modernizing journey, we face a key challenge - how do we use modern science to decode the way medicinal plants work, and then address today’s health needs with accuracy?

In the past, health was often described using concepts like the Five Elements, Yin and Yang, or nine-type body constitutions such as “Yin deficiency”, “damp-heat”, or the idea of “treating different diseases with the same approach”.

Today, however, many health concerns are approached differently. People usually focus on the root cause of a health problem and use specific measurable indicators such as inadequate vitamin intake, unstable blood sugar level or high body fat percentage. 

These two systems use different languages and different ways to understand health. Therefore, it is very complicated to bridge the gap. 

Example of developing anti-aging products:

Define the root cause: First, deeply analyze the reasons behind aging 

Identify the key issue: Specify the corresponding body issues 

Match the right ingredients: Select matching phytonutrients that can support body issues 

Trace the source: Define effective TCMs

Calculate dosage: Calculate the optimal dosage precisely 

Each step requires a large volume of data. The R&D team need to check and verify the data, then clarify complex relationships to find the best combination. It is just like finding a needle in a haystack! 

That’s why the team decided to build a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) data analytics platform – and the Shennong System was created.
